The Feelies, Pritzker Pavillion Chicago

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

I can’t say i knew who The Feelies were before sitting down on the lawn of the Pritzker Monday night, but I definitely know now. The energy this band exudes on stage is great, and their music just makes me want to dance. I will start my Feelies collection and try to learn more about them. It is just crazy that they called it quits 20 years ago and are back at it again.

Lollapalooza 2009 update rumors

Friday, March 27th, 2009

PrintThe rumors are flying and some of the ones that come from credible sources like Greg Kot at the Chicago Tribune sure make me all warm and fuzzy. Mr. Kot mentions four acts in this article ( Tribune Website ) The Killers, Tool, The Decemberists and Lou Reed; Do i need to say more?

If you must insist the Forums at lollapalooza.com has a compilation of the rumors and semi-confirmed, which include:

  • The aforementioned bands
  • Neko Case
  • Atmosphere
  • Kaiser Chiefs

Of course non of this means anything untill they are written down in stone, but the sources seem solid, and I for one ( Bobby assures me of this ) believe Greg Kot is a good source, with good sources. The wait is killing me.

Lollapalooza 2009

Friday, March 6th, 2009

PrintIt almost seems like only last month that lollapalooza 2008 passed by ( I know its 2009 now but you know what I mean ). Well the dates for the 2009 shows are released ( 08/07/2009 – 08/09/2009 ) and the rumors online abound about who will be coming. So far I’ve heard:

Cold Play
Depeche Mode
Blink 182
Green Day

It would be awesome to see if Jane’s Addiction goes, on the smaller groups Grand Ole Party, Kings of Leon ( not so small anymore I guess since Sex on Fire, this would be a good step forward ).

I will keep wondering who else is coming.

Metallica January 27th Show

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

metallica_1I tell you what, Metallica is the way to start your concert year. Sure it was at the end of the month and we had been waiting for it for a long time but it was worth it.

Let me start with the setlist:

  1. That Was Just Your Life
  2. The End of the Line
  3. Creeping Death
  4. Ride the Lightning
  5. One
  6. Broken, Beat and Scarred
  7. Cyanide
  8. Sad But True
  9. Wherever I May Roam
  10. All Nightmare Long
  11. The Day That Never Comes
  12. Master of Puppets
  13. Blackened
  14. Nothing Else Matters
  15. Enter Sandman

And the encore:

  1. Last Caress (Misfits cover)
  2. Motorbreath
  3. Seek and Destroy

As you can see they played a good amount of classic songs, but definitely showcase their new material, the playing was hard and fast as a Metallica show should be. Mind you we didn’t get good tickets but even up in the rafters the noise and the beat were pounding and heavy ( oh and i could feel the flames! ). Seeing Machine Head open, you get a sense of how hard it is to play on such a large stage for an audience that big! It seemed almost unfair for them, they looked so small, not to mention that the sound was muddled where we were … can you have muddled and too loud at the same time? well it seemed like that.

When Metallica jumped on stage you could see the potential brought forth in that kind of stage, with James moving around the stage to each microphone on the perimeter, and Robert Trujillo doing his troll under the bridge scaring the children walk around the stage ( that man is intimidating when he gets going ), Lars in the middle playing to the crowd and  Kirk, well Kirk was just what you expect, the cool and collected guitarist, to cool for the rest of us ( he is mind you ).

Overall, despite hanging out with the pigeons in the rafters the show was phenomenal, enjoy the pictures.

of note: I would like to thank Nikon for not sponsoring this post, but making a camera that survived a fall and rolling under the stage pyrotechnics. I am glad Bobby Talamine didn’t hurt himself, but would have liked to see him flailing to the ground and thankful for rubber matting.

Moe’s Top 10 Albums and Songs of 2008

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

used for the best of 2008 posts

These lists are always subjective and you might disagree with my choices, and many people will. Being the new year and all I feel obligated to make my own.

Albums:

  • 10. Worlds Collide – Apocalyptica
My real introduction to them and with guest performances it made repeated performances on my mp3 player
  • 9. Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend
This is really the way you should do a first album.
  • 8. Station – Russian Circles
Another first for me, local Chicago band, and when I found them I first thought “oh no instrumental!” but was sorely mistaken.
  • 7. Modern Guilt – Beck
I have a love hate relationship with Beck’s albums, this one is love.
  • 6. One day as a Lion – One day as a Lion
It’s just fun to listen to, a lot!
  • 5. Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends – Coldplay
It’s Coldplay on my list and not afraid of being made fun of ;)
  • 4. Death Magnetic – Metallica
WOW, It almost makes me want to wear ripped t-shirts and wish I had really long hair!
  • 3. Narrow Stairs  – Death Cab for Cutie
It has what we love about Death Cab, creepy beautiful music
  • 2.  Only by The Night – Kings of Leon
Tap your foot, dance a jig, do what you must… Just go out and listen to it as loud as you can.
  • 1. The Slip – Nine inch Nails
I am a fan of NIN, I could have put Ghosts IV, but that will play as background music, this one just goes to that level of classic NIN that will kick your ass.

Songs:

  • 10 – The Day That Never Comes, Metallica
  • 9 – Youngblood – Russian Circles
  • 8 – I’m not Jesus – Apocalyptica
  • 7 – Gamma Ray, Beck
